I’ll admit right off the bat that I know little about Lithops. I had seen them online and thought that they were interesting but given my history with succulents I passed on them. And then one day, after not killing Haworthia, Gasteria, and several cacti, I decided to try.
Everything I read said that most of them die due to overwatering, and I thought “pon”. So, I ordered some plants in varying sizes from varying sellers. I found some small, plastic pots with drainage holes. When the plants arrived, some were rooted, and some were not; some looked thirsty, and some looked very thirsty. I put the plants in the pots in pon and put them in a south window.
I staid my hand on immediate watering and after a few days I gave them a very light drink. Some seemed to plump up a bit, so every week I gave them another light watering. After a couple of weeks, they got good waterings. They’re still a bit wrinkly, but less so with each drink. I know when they start to split, I’m supposed to stop with the water, and that they should bloom in the spring. Maybe.
Oh, and they’re from southern Africa, and the name comes from the Greek meaning “stone face”. And now you know what I know. It’s an experiment, an adventure. I sure hope I don’t kill ‘em, ‘cause I do like the little guys.
