Way back in the last century, when I was young, families would gather in front of a large, retractable screen to look at slides and watch home movies together. Parents and relatives would comment about how little you were and how much you’d grown. I suppose today people pass around their phones. It seems similar and yet different; then we were watching, sharing and reacting as a group rather than a gathering of individuals.
But enough of sounding like an old man. Looking back at older images reminds us of where we were and the story of how we got to where we are. I see my plants every day, so it’s easy to forget just how far they’ve come. I think they’ve grown, but I could be wrong, so I started taking pictures of the plants when they first arrive. Every so often I look back at the first picture just to see where we are.
Sometimes it’s a “wow”, sometimes a “well it’s not dead”. I also keep a notebook of my plant adventures. I note when something arrives, or when I repot, or change growing medium, etc. But the adage about a “picture being worth a thousand words” holds true. Seeing what has changed can tell me more that my notes.
So you’re all invited to gather around our small, non-retractable screens and watch some home movies with me. I’d offer popcorn but you’re there and I’m here, and it is a short movie. Let’s see how much the kids have grown.
I’ll keep you posted.
