When he first came home, there were four different names on the tag. I immediately eliminated two of them, and I’m not even sure why they were ever included. Of the two remaining contenders, I had a suspicion about which it was.
But you don’t identify a hoya with surety until it blooms, so I waited. Over a year later, in July of this year, it bloomed for the first time; Hoya aff burtoniae. He was the first hoya to bloom under my care, so I was excited to know who he was and that he was happy.
That was July. It’s now December. He’s moved from the porch “conservatory” to the den, and he’s still blooming. Other hoyas have bloomed for me this year as well, but by comparison their blooming was short lived. Granted, they are smaller plants, but I didn’t expect that once it started it would continue for so long. And there are new peduncles forming.
I’m not complaining, just somewhat surprised; and delighted. It seemed a long time before hoyas bloomed for me, undoubtedly due to operator error, but I’d like to think it means I’m starting to figure this thing out.
