It’s not summer, at least not here in southern New England. Summer is but a fond memory. But this beauty, Primulina ‘Summer Song’, has started blooming and I’m not going to dissuade her.
I first discovered Primulina – Asian Violets – a few years ago in an online video. The presenter said he grew them for the foliage because they never bloomed. Boy be crazy, mine bloom regularly. Granted the foliage is striking, but why settle for one when you can have both.
Supposedly I do everything wrong with my violets, both the Asian and African varieties. I grow them in terra cotta, in a fairly well draining soil, in whatever the humidity happens to be, and they do well. They’re not as fussy, particularly the Primulina, as rumor would have you believe. In fact, I find the Primulina rather hardy and even easier to grow than the African varieties.
So, while the temperatures are getting cooler and cooler, and the hours of daylight are diminishing, this Primulina is putting on a show that will last for weeks. And double plus points, another of them is starting to send up buds.
I’ll keep you posted.
