An image of Hoya spartioides blossoms

The first time I saw Hoya spartioides in a video, I wanted one. A hoya without leaves must be one of the more interesting varieties of hoya. I was also sure I would kill it. It was so cool, so interesting, it must require special care. Spoiler alert, it doesn’t.

Finally, my desire to have one overcame my lack of hoya confidence, and I placed my order. It travelled well and had an uneventful transition to pon and self-watering. Then it started growing. And growing. I was so happy that it hadn’t died, and in fact was growing, that I didn’t even think about blossoms. Then I noticed some odd new developments on the peduncles. Buds.

I watched and I waited, since I knew that H spartioides only blooms for a day. Which is how I missed the first bloom. Hoya spartioides only blooms for a night. I caught the very last bit before the flowers closed in the morning. I was more attentive with the second peduncle and got to see those beautiful flowers and catch that faint whiff of burning tires.

There are buds forming on most of the other peduncles, I’ve got a “lush” plant, and I’m a bit more confident about my ability to grow hoyas. And it just keeps growing. I’m going to need to find out how to propagate it.

I’ll keep you posted.
