He’d been looking thirsty lately, and I’m really good about watering my hoyas, so my Hoya heuschkeliana shouldn’t be looking thirsty. But there was so much new growth that the mixture he was in couldn’t hold enough moisture for him, hence the puckered and wrinkled leaves.
I figured that if I simply up potted him into the same mix it wasn’t a good long-term fix. I decided on a transfer to a self-watering pot and pon-ish. That means you just set aside a chunk of time, get all your supplies together, get comfortable, and begin. Slowly, gently, literally bit by bit, you pick the organic matter from the roots. Spritz, pick, brush, pick…
Fortunately, very few roots had grown into the bark pieces, they were primarily wrapped around the bark; and they released with surprising ease. Whenever you work with hoya roots you’re going to do some damage, it’s unavoidable. But this seemed minimal, and I kept telling him that he’d appreciate it down the road.
So, he’s all settled in and been well watered. Growth will probably slow for a bit, it’s to be expected. But I think he’s going to be happy after his big move.
