I’ve had lousy results with hoya cuttings in prop boxes. Too many cuttings get moldy, or rot, or both. That, of course, means that the humidity in the box isn’t right and at this point I’m tired of messing with it.
Rooting in water works fine when I don’t bump it over and have a mess to clean up. I don’t like perlite, the dust is carcinogenic, and I hate picking sphag out of new roots before they go into pon. Miro @basie.plants, my Hoya Hero, said to root them in what you use to grow them. Which makes absolute sense to me, and for me that means pon. At my house, hoyas root well in pon.
I needed a stable, controllable, easy answer. Using what I had around the house, I figured out a way to create a nice little greenhouse environment that I can adjust as needed. Excess moisture drains out of the small cup, and the larger cup can be removed or perforated as necessary for humidity control. I’m sure it would work with larger saucers and cups I just haven’t figured out the sizes yet.
Might not be the answer for everyone, and it’s not the solution for big leaves, but it’s working very well for me and smaller leaf hoyas.
I’ll keep you posted.
