As I was making the rounds in my continual cycle of watering, out of the corner of my eye I noticed some exceptionally bright splash on my Spathiphyllum ‘Domino’. This guy is known for its splashy and textured leaves, but this seemed too bright.
It was not splash, but blooms, three of them, and they were really white. In the lower light against the green of the leaves, the bracts popped out. One was fully opened and the spadix was completely visible, and the other two were just beginning to open.
I really like Spathiphyllum, and I’m not precisely sure why. My experience has been that they are tough and resilient. They provide a beautiful mass of green that will happily tolerate lower light; and they are very undemanding. Except for one thing. Water. They want more water than most other plants, and when they don’t get it, they get dramatic. But given a good drink and they bounce right back; no harm, no foul.
I have several spaths, yet this is the only variegated one. Don’t tell the others, but he is my favorite. Combine all their good qualities with splashy, textured leaves, yeah, he’s a winner.
I’ll keep you posted.
