I found him hanging in a big box store. I lifted the pot and knew immediately it shouldn’t weigh that much. He’d been overwatered. I poured out the water that was in the saucer and took him to check out. All the way home I was thinking about ways to dry him out and how soon I could get him out of the mud.
It’s not that Hoya curtisii hates water, no hoya hates water. He would just rather sip than slurp. In my set-up he seems to prefer a very light watering, and he prefers it to happen regularly. Once we figured that out, things have been good. He’s not a speedy grower, but a steady grower.
He’s a strange combination of tough and fragile. Those textured leaves are pretty tough, tougher than one might expect for a small leafed hoya. But if a vine gets abused it’ll just up and die, turning a crispy khaki color and taking the leaves with it. So, I just leave him alone, water regularly, and appreciate from afar.
He’s been here for a couple of years now, and he’s a good addition to the collection. We’re still waiting for blooms, but I grow hoyas, I’ve learned to wait.
I’ll keep you posted.
