Drosera capensis blossom

That’s right, I said it, and I’ll repeat it, gnat free. The only fungus gnats I see are dead ones. I tried everything: the bits, the waterings, the traps. Nothing, nothing has worked as effectively as my carnivorous plants. Period. And now Drosera capensis is blooming.

There is a whole string of round buds waiting their turn to open. The blooms are pretty little things, and it seems I get one a day. Which is cool because it means I’m going to get a daily blossom for about two weeks. I knew that they bloomed, I just didn’t expect that they’d bloom in my care.

I thought they’d be fussy, but they’re not. They want boggy soil and lots of light, so I’ve got mine in a self-watering pot under the grow lights. The mix is about 60% pumice and 40% coco peat, and he gets water from the dehumidifier. And he ate my fungus gnats. I haven’t seen a flying fungus gnat in a very, very long time.

So, if the gnats are making you nutty, this is the answer; plus, you get a new plant out of it, and it blooms, and the dead gnats are feeding the plant that eliminates them. That’s like a win-win-win-win situation, which sounds good to me.

I’ll keep you posted.
