As if the leaves weren’t beautiful enough, Hoya nicholsoniae, the hoya formerly known as hellwigiana, bloomed for me this week. I first noticed the peduncle several weeks ago. When the buds formed, I hoped they wouldn’t blast, and on Monday morning they were open.
I was first drawn to this hoya because of the foliage, and who wouldn’t be. I was never sure that I could get a hoya to bloom, and if hoyas weren’t going to bloom, they’d better look good just sitting there. This hoya, which I still call hellwigiana to differentiate it from my other nicholsoniae, does just that.
He’s been putting out a nice vine and handsome leaves for a couple of months. The new leaves have a glossy green finish with that striking vein pattern. Both the gloss and the veins fade a bit as the leaves age, but it doesn’t detract from the visual appeal.
But the blossoms are like frosting on the cake. That pale yellow color sets it apart from any of my hoya that have bloomed so far; and I do love yellow flowers.
I’ll keep you posted.
I finally decided to check out your website. I like what you’re doing here! Very nice!
Thanks. I appreciate the visit and your kind words.
