Hoya polyneura 'Broget'

Every time my Hoya polyneura ‘Broget’ does something interesting, I remind myself that I never wanted it. I didn’t like the “fishtail” moniker, didn’t like the expensive price tag, didn’t like it’s “must have’ vibe of the time. Then I got a little two-leaf cutting as a thank-you with an order, and OK, I’ll root it.

It didn’t die but seemed a little slow to root. Fine, I had no expectations. It had been free and whatever happened happened. I had no investment – financial or emotional – in it. Then he started to grow. The new leaves were really striking, and I started to understand the appeal. And it kept growing. Nice.

I recently took a week’s vacation. I expected to find a few casualties upon my return, but there were none; and the polyneura had decided to start putting out another vine and tiny leaves. All new hoya leaves are very cool, new polyneura leaves are extra very cool. And I reminded myself that I’d never wanted it. No one plans a guilt trip like I do.

So OK, it won me over. There’s a bit of an emotional investment now, and I’m excited to see what he does next. More leaves are good, blooms would be really good. No pressure. We’ll see.

I’ll keep you posted.
