The first time I saw a Hoya burmanica in a video, I wanted one. It didn’t look like anything else I had in my collection; long, dark green leaves, splashing, arching branches. It took a bit of time to find one, but clearly, I did.
And I wasn’t disappointed when it arrived. Though very small plants, there were two rooted cuttings in the pot, I decided to keep them in a barky mix quite like the mix they had travelled in. But there was little activity. For a couple of months, no growth; one of the cuttings looked like it might not make it. Most of my hoyas really like my pon-ish and self-watering set-up, so I took the chance and moved them.
That turned out to be a good call. Within weeks both cuttings, even the one I was worried about, showed signs of growth. They have since gone from being pale little plants to, I think, elegant plants. What I first saw in that plant video is now growing on my shelves. Except for the blooms. There are some tiny peduncles starting to form, so there is hope.
I love a good plant story with a happy ending, and it seems that’s how the tale of my Hoya burmanica is working out.
I’ll keep you posted.
