Sometimes I have what seem like really great ideas, like “I need a big leaf hoya”. And it’s usually not that it’s a bad idea, it’s more often that my brain is talkin’ outta my butt. Which is how I ended up with Hoya latifolia ‘Sarawak’ and Hoya merrillii.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy with both and glad they’re here. My situation comes from my interpretation of the word ‘big”. I must have been looking at lacunosa when I had my thought about bigger leaves, so my frame of reference may have been skewed.
When these guys arrived, they had leaves that were bigger than a lacunosa. Cool. Then they started putting out new leaves. Cool. The new leaves were even bigger. Cool. The new leaves kept getting bigger. Uh-Oh. Some of the new leaves are now 5” (12.7cm) across. So, I got what I wished for, I just didn’t know what I was wishing for.
I’m thinking they’re gonna need bigger trellises, something architectural, and soon. Which is not a bad thing, just more than I had envisioned. I need to learn to do research, not just look at pictures before I order.
I’ll keep you posted.
