Haworthia fasciata

Someone gave it to her, and she gave it to me because she didn’t like succulents. That’s all I knew about my first Haworthia, even less because I didn’t even know it was a Haworthia.

So, now I know the genus. I know they’re from in and around South Africa and that they’re related to aloes. I also know they’re one of the few succulents I can keep alive. I started with one and now I’ve got, well, too many. These are my “for fun” plants. I don’t need to know the varieties or taxonomy or any “knowledge” stuff. They’re cool, they grow, and we’re happy.

Mine live in a south facing window, in a really well draining mix in terra cotta. I think the reason three of them are blooming is because I was bad and let too much time pass between waterings. When I finally did water, they thought the rains had come and it was time to bloom. Oops, sorry kids.

These guys are available in the cactus area of most big box stores (they’re sometimes mis-labelled) and are usually very cheap. No muss, no fuss, no drama, no trauma, and they’ll bloom.

I’ll keep you posted.
