I wasn’t worried when I ordered this Hoya lacunosa ‘Asami’ Clone 2 last year. I’ve found that, except for ‘Giant Leaf’, I can grow lacunosa. They grow and bloom and lacs may be my favorite species. Why wouldn’t you love a species that gives you no trouble.
This guy started off as a very lightly rooted little five leaf cutting, with some new growth that didn’t die back in transit Always a plus. He’s growing in pon-ish under grow lights in a self-watering pot and would appear to be very happy there. That’s a lot of new growth in a relatively short time. But I find that my lacs love pon-ish and self-watering.
The outer variegation is, of course, the unique feature of this lac. I like what he’s got, and I’m not complaining, but I wish he had a bit more. And that it was more consistent; some leaves have almost none and others have a nice prominent band. But I’m sure he’s doing what he can about it.
With the growth he’s put out, it’s probably time to take a cutting or two. I think at least one more start would fill out the pot quite nicely. Maybe from a vine that has the stronger variegation. But let’s not mention it to him just yet.
I’ll keep you posted.
