I ordered this hoya, Hoya pubicalyx, a couple of years ago because I wanted a hoya with really splashy leaves. At the time I didn’t have any that fit that description. I never considered that it would bloom. It had the descriptor ‘Silver-Pink’, but I didn’t pay much attention since I never expected to see them.
But this spring it decided to surprise me and put out a peduncle. That began the long, slow, agonizing wait to see whether it would bloom. Of course, I checked it almost daily which only added to the agony. Would it bloom or would it blast?
When the buds started fattening, I let myself hope for the best, and here we are.
The colors are vibrant, the edges fuzzy, and the scent reminds me a bit of lacunosa, but not quite. So, this hoya is everything I wanted it to be and more – big splashy leaves and blooms.
It reminds me that there was a time when I never expected any hoya to bloom for me, a time when I thought myself lucky that they didn’t die. It’s sort of a mile marker on my hoya journey.
I’ll keep you posted.
