Hoya flagellata

I didn’t have many expectations when I ordered Hoya flagellata, I wasn’t sure that I wanted it or even liked it. But I know that I often need to see a hoya in person before I get it. So, I got it and then I got it.

Leathery prehistoric looking leaves with a bit of splash, some undulation along the edges, subtle texture, so unlike any of the others in my collection at that time. At that time. This is the hoya that changed that; what I used to think of as too weird I now see as too cool.

The new leaves look dead, scary dead, like “what’s wrong with this plant” looking dead. Then they start to grow and harden off, and some green appears, and the mangled look disappears. The green darkens, they turn into adult leaves, and aren’t they just cool.

This guy’s been a steady grower. He’s living in bark/sphag and a net pot, likes just a touch more water than most, and has presented about four new leaves since Spring arrived. He seems to appreciate the new trellis, and I appreciate his efforts.

I’ll keep you posted.
