Phalaenopsis Orchid

One by one they join the club, the who’s in bloom club. Sometime in the middle of February the first of the Phalaenopsis orchids start blooming at my house. The first isn’t always the same, but one by one they each take their turn.

I‘m not sure of the specific identity of this one. It was a gift, and I was happy to receive it, and you don’t ask questions. They knew as much as was on the label, which is what I now know, which is “orchid”. I added the Phalaenopsis part myself, ‘cause it turns out I knew a bit more than the label.

If orchids intimidate you, as they once did me, you can set that aside. If they can survive What the big box and discount food stores do to them, they can survive most anything you can do to them. So, relax, bring one home. Avoid the blue ones, they’ve been painted and won’t bloom that color again. Don’t do the ice thing. It’s an epiphyte, so no dirt. Vented pot, regular watering, good light, maybe a little bit of sunshine, you’ll be fine.

In no time you’ll be at the scratch and dent rack in the big box saying “I can fix that”. And you will, and you’ll have your own lineup of blooms on the way.

I’ll keep you posted.
