Ludisia discolor

Insignificant. That’s how the blossoms of Ludisia discolor were described, and that seems kinda harsh. They may be tiny but they’re beautiful. I’ll bet the plant is kinda proud of them, too, since they are apparently working successfully for that whole reproduction thing. It’s not always about size.

This is that update about my new Jewel Orchid. I said that if it bloomed there would be pictures and an update, and well, it did and this is it. He’s settled into his new pot and new environment. The buds he had when I got him are starting to bloom, and there are new shoots appearing at the soil. So, at present, things look promising.

Their reputation is that of being demanding and difficult, but a few online planteurs I respect – here_butnot and missorchidgirl – dismissed those ideas. He’s living in the fallout light from my grow shelves in a nice airy mix, and seems happy there. Since they’re not the divas they are portrayed to be, I’ve got a couple more Jewel Orchids on the way, so he’ll have company soon.

Discovering a new genus, or two, can be an adventure. Sometimes the learning curve is too sharp a turn, things go off the rails, and there are casualties. Other times you’re lucky and you find a genus you just “get”. Trying to avoid the former, hoping for the latter.

I’ll keep you posted.
