Hoya latifolia 'Sarawak'

I wanted a hoya that was unlike anything else in my collection. I could have been smart and careful, done my research, and learned about the plant before making my choice. I’m usually pretty good about that, I mean, no sense buying a plant that wants things you can’t provide. But no, in this instance I looked at pictures and said “I want that.”

I wasn’t disappointed when I unwrapped Hoya latifolia ‘Sarawak’; in fact, just the opposite. It was exactly what I didn’t know I wanted. There was a moment’s concern of “these leaves could get very big”, but with ignorant optimism, I brushed that concern aside. He got settled in, didn’t die, and little by little I saw new roots reaching through the medium; though not much else.

Then he, along with all the others, got sulfured. In very little time I saw the start of a new leaf, and it’s just been getting bigger. Which is, of course, what I want, but again there was that earlier size concern. Fortunately I found my ignorant optimism once again as the new leaf developed a handsome bronze color.

I also think I see a growth point forming, which is almost as exciting as the new leaf. I’ve had time to do my research, and he is a latifolia. I’m still optimistic, but I’m not sure if it’s that he grows into a nice plant, or that he turns into a monster.

I’ll keep you posted.
