When I hear people talk about cacti being easy ‘cause you don’t have to do anything, you don’t even have to water them, I don’t pay them any mind. It’s pointless. You do have to do stuff, and I’ve got a few cactus carcasses to prove it.
At first I killed them by overwatering. Then I progressed to killing them by underwatering. We now seem to have found a happy middle. So when I saw this plant in a big box labeled as a spineless cactus I was intrigued and felt safe bringing him home. No information on the tag, of course, but a search of the grower’s site has it labeled as Cereus jamacaru.
The simplicity of the plant was what first caught my eye, beautiful green with little white tufts. It almost looks unreal, and yes, it has no spines, or what we would consider spines. Those tiny white tufts may be his version of them, and next to some of my other specimens he looks almost naked.
I like my cacti in terra cotta, and he was very rootbound, so I loosened him up and got him some new digs. And a bit of a drink. They may overwater everything else in a big box, but they never water the cacti. So we’ll see what happens, and with luck it won’t be pointless.
