Sometimes when you order a plant online, it comes with battle scars. Hoyas, in particular, seem to carry those scars forever. You’re happy to have the plant, wish it were more perfect, but it’s not and at least you’ve got it. So it was with my Hoya deykeae.
I wasn’t sure when I ordered it. The leaf shape made me think of Hoya kerrii, which I don’t like. But when it arrived all those comparisons disappeared. I loved it. He, like a lot of my exes, came with some damage, but this one, unlike all of my exes, I kept. I’d been experimenting with pon and decided to try him in that. He was in cocoa peat, so I cleaned up the roots and settled him into a self-watering pot and pon.
And he sat there for several months doing nothing; flat mites of course. Within days of the first sulfur treatment he started pushing out a new vine and it became apparent I was going to need a trellis, soon. The new vine hasn’t stopped, and there’s even some new leaves appearing. I may need to figure out a more substantial trellis if this keeps up; which I would be fine with.
So the splash, and the leaf shape, and even the battle scars, I’m good with all of it. He’s growing like a weed, and I’m good with that too. Don’t regret that purchase at all.
I’ll keep you posted.
