hoya caudata flat mites

A few people have asked if the whole sulfur treatment thing is, or has been, worth the bother. I’ve got close to 100 hoyas, so doing a thorough job of spraying or brushing takes a couple of hours. And I’m doing it once a week for a minimum of six weeks, but probably eight.

I asked the same question when I started. Is it worth it? How much of a difference could it make? I’ve still got a couple of weeks to go, but my answer is a resounding “yes”.

Consider that my lyi, kanyakumariana, aff serpens, GPS 7240, and many others, had not put out any new growth in the months since I got them. My callistophylla had not put out any growth in almost two years. Some of my other hoyas had similar stories. But within weeks of starting treatment, and in some cases mere days, there was new growth on almost everyone. The flat mite infestation was probably worse than I imagined.

I used to think hoyas were finicky, slow growers. But now my hoyas are growing, actively, the way plants should. So if you’re giving your hoyas good care, and they are just sitting there, glowering at you, could be flat mites. And it’s worth the bother.

I’ll keep you posted.
