For all the drama and trauma that are sometimes part and parcel of my collection, there are a few plants that never give me trouble. They are beautiful and lush, green and growing; and because they never throw a hissy-fit they sometimes get overlooked.
The quiet ones, like this Aglaonema “Silver Bay”. For me, Ags are so easy. They want a well-draining mix and a non-porous container. They want medium light and water about every other week. When I bring a new one home, I know one or two of the oldest leaves are going to go yellow, and then we’re fine. They can handle a bit less or a bit more light than medium, but they don’t want more water.
About half of mine came from big box stores, so they’re available, and inexpensive. They vary from simple variegation to insane color mixes with reds, yellows, and whites. They’re steady growers. They’re typically happy just hanging out, but with the right conditions they can get big and lush.
Lots of things to like and no hassles; sounds like a commercial for Ags. In a way it is. Someone’s gotta spread the word, after all, they’re the quiet ones.
I’ll keep you posted.
