primulina hotei

Buying a plant can sometimes make you feel as if you’re rolling the dice. You finally find a plant you thought you wanted, you grow it for a while, and then “meh”. That didn’t work out as planned. It’s as if you can’t remember why you wanted it in the first place.

But that is not the case with this Primulina ‘Hotei’; in fact, just the opposite. I wasn’t quite sure that I wanted it. I have several “African Violets”, but did I want or need an “Asian Violet”? I mean a violet’s a violet, right?

Nope. For me, Primulinas are even easier to care for than their African counterparts; but the blooms are completely different. They rise up and almost hover above the plant. The leaves on some are almost corrugated, while others have beautiful patterns of white veins. You could almost grow almost grow these hardy guys for the foliage alone, but you won’t.

At my house the Primulinas bloom regularly with no special care or attention. They’re not at all fussy or demanding, and I keep saying, “Gee I’m glad I bought those”.

I’ll keep you posted.
