Both of these plants are Hoya carnosa ‘Krimson Queen’. Both of them came in the same pot, planted as one “plant”. They were one of my first hoyas. They were also the first hoya I moved to something other than soil.
I had this Krimson Queen for months with no growth. I learned a bit more, and since it wasn’t growing, I decided to move the plant to bark and sphag. When I took it out of the soil I saw that there were two plants, so the experiment expanded. One plant went to bark, the other went to leca. The one in bark loved it, the one in leca didn’t love it; and after a few more furtive months, she too went to bark.
The big one lives in front of a window, the small on my grow shelves. Other than location their care is identical, yet their color and leaf shape differ. The big one vines and has put out a peduncle. The small one keeps putting out all white leaves, which last for months but eventually fail.
If you’ve ever wondered how lighting can affect hoyas, here you go. They could have different mothers, but they started out so close in appearance that I thought they were the same plant. And no, I don’t have a favorite; I enjoy each one for what it is.
I’ll keep you posted.
