The tray was labeled “H carnosa”. I already had one of those, had a couple actually. But I gave it a look over anyway, just in case; and one of them was not like the others. I wasn’t exactly sure what it was, but I knew it was a hoya and it wasn’t a carnosa.
At the register they scanned the tag for me to discover its identity, and I heard “oh, I’m going to mispronounce this”. So she just showed me the result on her phone: Hoya nummularioides. I had already decided it was coming home, it was just nice to know what it was. He took to his new digs and has just been a slow, steady grower.
The leaves, which look rather plain, some might even say boring, have a neat coating of fuzz. As they mature, they start to get a bit of thickness to them and a slight wave. I like that he’s solid green with almost no splash; it’s the simplicity that makes him interesting and makes him stand out in my collection.
He’s also not fussy, at least for me; no drama, no trauma. He seems to appreciate good light, and just a bit more water than I first expected. Given those two things he seems happy just to grow, which is fine with me.
