When you first start trying to grow plants you figure you can grow anything. Then you suffer some casualties. You become less sure of success. You see some striking plant and you easily tell yourself: “That’s really beautiful. I could kill it.”
Then there are fewer casualties, and then almost none. (Despite what you’ve been told, everyone has casualties.) That’s when the true adventure of houseplants begins. You’ve gone from “I could kill that” to “I could grow that”. And it can seem like you go through that process with each new genus.
I felt that way about this Hoya crassipetiolata. The farther I fall down this Hoya rabbit hole, the more often I find myself saying “I could probably grow that”. I do a bit more research than I used to, and I have a bit more experience, and a dangerous amount of confidence.
Maybe it’s ironically true: “you gotta kill some plants to grow some plants.” Certainly has been for me. I’m hoping this Hoya doesn’t get promoted to compost, but it is me and plants, so anything could happen.
I’ll keep you posted.
