I know Anthurium are all the rage, just not this one. I know everybody wants a fancy Anthurium, just not me. This is the one I wanted – Anthurium andraeanum – and I’m happy with my choice.
Sure the leaves aren’t fancy, but there are a lot of them. And I get blossoms; this summer, three of them. This guy is so easy going, so undemanding. He came from a big box, so he wasn’t expensive. And once I got him out of the lousy mix and useless pot, everything’s pretty fine.
All of that means I don’t worry about him, I can just enjoy having the plant. Sometime I start thinking that since this guy grows for me, I could probably grow some of the fancy ones, too. But then I see stories about struggles, and special lighting, and humidity, and grow cabinets, and they only ever get two leaves, and they can be expensive, and no thanks. I need some of my plants to just be for fun.
These guys are around. I often see them on the discount shelf. Once the blooms are done they’re not in demand, and with minimal care they’ll bloom again. And if you’re thinking about trying a fancy one, maybe get your feet wet with one that isn’t fancy or expensive.
I’ll keep you posted.
