During my vacation, I visited with some long-time friends. As has become our custom, we traded plants. It’s fun because we are interested in different kinds of plants and so introduce each other to new things. Beth knows I’m into epiphytes, so she asked if I wanted a very generous rooted start from her “Night Blooming Cereus”. Um, yes please.
Home with my new treasure, I learned that there are about a dozen plants all known as Night Blooming Cereus. But it didn’t take me long to figure this one out. I’m no expert, but I’m pretty certain it’s Epiphyllum oxypetalum. I have a couple of Epiphyllum in my collection, and they don’t look like this guy so he’s a welcome addition. Beth’s plant is massive, but I think I’ve got time before that’s an issue.
He’d been raised in her standard potting mix, but I like my ephiphytes in bark and a bit of sphagnum. Since the soil was dry, it seemed a good time to repot, and luckily I had the right size orchid pot on the shelf. He’s settled in and has had a good drink, and he’s looking none the worse for his journey.
Those wide, leathery leaves are very cool and are unique to my collection. Thanks Beth. Fingers crossed that he likes his new home. I’ll keep you posted.
