alocasia micholitziana frydek

It’s a good thing that plants are rather resilient, especially for me. A case in point is my Alocasia micholitziana ‘Frydek’. Back in late April I decided it was time for a repot. It had survived several bouts of spider mites and was again starting to look healthy, so it was getting fresh soil and a larger, non-porous pot.

When cleaning up I discovered three small lumps that looked a bit like hazel nuts. There was a brief “ah-ha” moment when I realized that they were corms, followed by a “what do I have to lose” moment. Internet research led me to my solution: clear plastic cups, coco peat and perlite, plastic wrap. Spoon of mix, add water, add corm, cover with plastic, place on grow shelf.

The net said it could take a while, but to just leave them. In fact I essentially forgot about them until the other day, three months later. I noticed green and thought “there’s not anything green in those”. But there was. All three had sprouted, despite me having no experience and maybe even planting the corms upside-down.

They all had very healthy root systems, and so they got moved to my standard mix and small pots. One even has a beautiful, small ‘Frydek’ leaf and the other two are not far behind. I’m so glad plants are resilient enough that they can survive my sometimes incompetent care.

I’ll keep you posted.
