As an orchid whisperer, I have been the recipient many donations – the ones that never bloom again, the ones that don’t look good, the ones that don’t do anything. This is one of the donations; a Phalaenopsis or “Moth Orchid.”
This actually came from a friend of my neighbor, one of two she gave to her to give to me. She told my neighbor it never bloomed again even though she gave it an ice cube every week. Happily the friend wasn’t there so she didn’t hear my pained outburst nor see my eyes roll back.
I’m not an orchid expert. I do what I do and the orchids I have seem to like it. Some are in net pots, some are in terra cotta, all are in bark and sphagnum. They spend the winters in west facing windows and summers in the northeast side of the porch. They get a good drink at least once a week. And that spray orchid fertilizer with the pink label is good stuff – for any epiphyte.
I could learn a lot more about my orchids, get serious about them. But they’re the plants I don’t worry about, the carefree plants. That’s their job. I worry about other plants in my collection, but not these guys. Then of course there are those blooms…
I’ll keep you posted.
