disocactus anguliger

I’m not sure when it happened, but suddenly there’s a lot of new growth on my Disocactus anguliger, Ric Rac or Fishbone cactus. I gave it a good drink just over a week ago, and there were some tiny green shoots. But yesterday I was looking at something next to him and, holy cow, where’d all this come from.

I found him at a local nursery this winter. He settled in and put out one new stem, I think just to let me know he was happy. This spring he migrated with the other plants out to the porch. He’s got a nice shelf that gets dappled sunlight, and is apparently very happy there. I have a hanging planter all picked out for him, and later this summer he’s getting a new home. It’s a surprise, so don’t say anything.

I’ve been exploring epiphytes lately, particularly jungle cactus. I like the seeming paradox of “jungle” and “cactus”; and it’s fun to watch the reaction when you tell folks that’s what it is. He’s a cactus, but an epiphyte, so no cactus mix but rather a really barky and airy mix. He’s a cactus, but jungle cactus, so no all-day sunshine, just dappled light. He’s a cactus, but jungle cactus, so regular watering.

We took some pictures, and he’s back on his shelf. I need to do some more research and find out when he’ll bloom, that’s something to look forward to.

I’ll keep you posted.
