It was finally time. Each time I lifted this Hoya australis out of his cover pot for watering, it looked like Santa’s beard. There were lots of healthy white roots coming out through all sides of the six-inch net pot he called home. But repotting this guy was not a simple task.
I don’t usually keep a supply of eight-inch nets pots, so that had to be ordered. Once that arrived, I needed to find a cover pot to fit the net pot, and one heavy enough to keep him stable. Then I needed to build a new trellis for him. When everything was ready, it was time for the extrication.
I was hesitant; this could all go very wrong. I laid him down and snipped all the ties on his trellis. It fell apart, as planned, and he was free. A bit of gentle jiggling and the root ball came out as one piece, and the protruding roots slipped through the net pot. I lost almost no roots. Whew!
From that point, settling him into his new digs was simple. A few minutes of gentle work and he was settled on his new trellis. Not as tough as I had feared. Since then he’s been sitting in the morning sun, getting a bit of sun-stress, and living his Hoya life. Yay.
I’ll keep you posted.
