I didn’t like Syngonium; the muted colors, the chaotic vining, the frilly leaves. Then I saw this one at a local nursery and that all changed. This Syngonium podophyllum ‘White Butterfly’ was tucked off to the side on a plant shelf, not really with the others. It was larger and didn’t have any of those pink colors that I dislike.

That was probably why he was still there and that turned out fine. He’s become one of my favorites. He grows like a weed for me, so much so that I constructed a trellis for him. The variety of color patterns on the leaves seems endless. I’ve had him close to a year now, and he’s one of my best purchases.

When I’ve taken cuttings, they seem to root in days. He wants a bit of sunshine, a regular drink, and prefers a non-porous container; other than that, he’s no trouble. Expect for that crazy growth thing.

I get why people rave about Syngonium. I’ve thought about looking for some of those fancy and expensive varieties, but if they grow for me the way this guy has, space will be an issue. Right now, he and I are doing just fine.

I’ll keep you posted.
