Since trying my hand at cacti, a potentially hazardous venture, I’ve been looking for a slightly larger specimen. The little four dollar guys from the big box are great, but I know it’s going to be a while before any of them get some stature. Because I’m kinda new to this plant family I was reluctant to spend too much since my history with cacti isn’t stellar.
But once something’s on my radar like that I keep my eyes open. As luck would have it I found this handsome Echinocactus grusonii “Golden Barrel” at Gabriella Plants. At the time he was on sale, and the weather was tolerable, so I took the chance. I must admit, I was very curious about how one would ship a larger cactus, but they had it under control and it arrived with only a few bent spines.
I was so surprised when I opened that box. Larger that I had expected, with a beautiful golden hue; I think I said “wow” out loud. So for the time being, my cactus craving seems sated. Now I can concentrate on keeping my little gang alive. They’re hanging out with my Haworthia in the south facing window, so fingers crossed they continue to do well.
I’ll keep you posted.
