dracaena surculosa

He’s not rare. He’s never trending on social media or mentioned when people talk about great variegation. He’s sometimes called Gold Dust Plant (which I get) or Japanese Bamboo Florida Beauty (which I don’t get); and about this time every year my Dracaena surculosa starts sending out new growth. Those little growth points are a reminder that Spring is coming.

When I first got this plant, I had a hard time figuring out what he was and what he wanted. I was looking in the wrong places. Since he was labeled as “Japanese Bamboo”, bamboo was where I started looking. Who would have guessed Dracaena? It sure doesn’t look like any of the others in my collection. I had an “Oh” moment, and we get along fine now.

I like that he’s different from my other Dracaena; and I like that variegation, there’s something a bit wild about it. I also like that he’s no trouble at all. Well-draining soil, bright indirect, and just a bit more moisture than his relatives, is all he asks. The results are those leaves – wide spotted leaves on those slender stems. The slightest breeze or touch and they move very gently, almost seeming to float on air.

We need to make this guy trend. He deserves the attention. I’ll keep you posted.
