The other day someone asked about the Monstera siltepecana I decided to grow on a pole. I called it ‘The Great Moss Pole Experiment’. I know it’s a coir pole, but work with me. I’d grown plants for years, but I’d never deliberately given one a pole to climb.

Seven months ago I found a large pot of siltepecana at a big box store. I actually cut open the plastic to see what was on that shipping rack. As soon as I saw those leaves I knew it was coming home. There were a lot of plantlets in that pot, and I decided to try a few things. Most of them got potted with a pole, some of them got potted to trail, and a few small plants got potted to give away to friends.

The plants around the pole sputtered for a bit, getting settled in. Then it was as if they discovered they had something to climb, and climb they did. I thought that 48″ pole was going to look silly and empty for a long time. Now I’m glad I can add an extension to it.

So yes, I think that experiment worked out fine, thank you.

I’ll keep you posted.
